VIRGIN BET HEROES HANDICAP HURDLE - PREVIEW & TIPS

3:10 SANDOWN
VIRGIN BET HEROES HANDICAP HURDLE (PREMIER HANDICAP) (GBB RACE)

A deep, attritional staying handicap where handling the ground and conserving energy for Sandown’s finish should matter as much as class.

HEROES HANDICAP HURDLE - PREVIEW

The Heroes Handicap Hurdle has evolved into one of the more important midwinter tests for staying hurdlers, a race that often rewards proven course form and a touch of toughness. Sandown is demanding at the best of times, but with the hurdles track described as heavy, soft in places, this looks set to become a proper stamina examination. Twelve hurdles might not sound many, yet on testing ground the rhythm between them and the ability to keep rolling rather than repeatedly having to re-ignite becomes crucial.

It is also the sort of handicap where the obvious headline horses can be forced to earn it. The best treated runner on paper is not always the one who wins because the race asks for a blend of staying power, balance and the resilience to keep finding up the hill. Several arrive with the right kind of recent prep run and there is a mix of proven course specialists, improving stayers stepping up in grade and one or two returning from breaks who add an element of uncertainty to the puzzle.

HEROES HANDICAP HURDLE - RUNNER BY RUNNER GUIDE

SANTOS BLUE - 12/1

★★★

A likeable stayer who won a three-mile handicap hurdle at Newbury last February and has shaped with some promise on both starts for his new yard this season. He is carrying top-weight in very demanding conditions and that tends to magnify any small weakness, especially in a race where several look better treated lower down. He should run his race, but this asks him to give away weight to rivals arriving with stronger recent staying evidence.

1
SANTOS BLUE @12/1 BEN SUTTON(5) | OLLY MURPHY 521-56

RED DIRT ROAD - 8/1

★★★

Last year’s winner and his course-and-distance success in heavy ground is an obvious tick in a race like this. The concern is what he will have retained after a long absence and he returns 6lbs above his last winning mark, which removes the margin for error. If he is ready to roll first time back he can threaten, but he comes with more questions than some of the sharper, match-fit contenders.

2
RED DIRT ROAD @8/1 JONJO O'NEILL JR | JONJO & A J O'NEILL /511P-

TITAN DISCOVERY - 9/1

★★★★

Lightly raced for his age and his latest performance suggests he may still be improving, winning a handicap hurdle at Cheltenham over three miles 50 days ago. That effort showed he stays strongly and can battle, two qualities you want on this track in the mud. He is 5lbs higher now, so it is tougher, but his profile is that of a horse heading the right way rather than one relying on past glories.

3
TITAN DISCOVERY @9/1 LIAM HARRISON | ROBBIE LLEWELLYN /71-01

HENRI THE SECOND - 3/1

★★★★★

A Sandown specialist over hurdles who nearly added another course win earlier this month when a close second over shorter, having won here over 2m7f last season on heavy. That is the strongest piece of relevant course-and-distance evidence in this line-up and the return to a stiffer trip looks a major positive on what he has already shown. He looks the type who can travel into it, jump accurately and keep finding in the closing stages, which is often the winning combination in this particular race.

4
HENRI THE SECOND @3/1 HARRY COBDEN | PAUL NICHOLLS 120-32

ROARING CONQUEST - 7/1

★★★★

A progressive type who made a successful return on handicap debut at Windsor over this sort of trip and then backed it up with a creditable third at Carlisle over 3m1f on soft. He has already proven he stays and being a seven-year-old with that profile suggests there could still be more to come. This is a much deeper contest, but he arrives with the right kind of recent form and looks one of the more solid contenders at the weights.

5
ROARING CONQUEST @7/1 GAVIN SHEEHAN | OLLY MURPHY 139-13

HARTINGTON - 4/1

★★★★

Showed a very good level earlier this season, winning at Carlisle and then going close in a competitive Haydock handicap over three miles. His latest run at Windsor over a shorter trip is best forgiven given he now returns to a more suitable test and this ground should place the emphasis back on stamina rather than speed. He has the look of a horse who can bounce back sharply and he is firmly on the shortlist if reproducing his best.

6
HARTINGTON @4/1 JACK TUDOR | JOE TIZZARD 22-120

GABBYS CROSS - 11/1

★★★

Shaped better on his second start for a new yard when third in a handicap chase here over three miles, staying on late. He now switches back to hurdles from 4lbs lower and a return to the smaller obstacles could help him find a smoother rhythm. The age profile is not ideal and he needs things to fall his way, but the mark and recent sign of life mean he cannot be dismissed.

7
GABBYS CROSS @11/1 JAMES BOWEN | NICK SCHOLFIELD 82-043

MINELLA MISSILE - 12/1

★★★

A classy performer at his peak, highlighted by a Grade 2 novice win at Cheltenham in 2023 and he has hinted at a return to form recently, most notably when fifth of fifteen in a Windsor handicap hurdle 13 days ago on soft. He remains a risky proposition given his stop-start profile, yet the ability is there and he is on a mark that allows him to get competitive if he continues trending in the right direction.

8
MINELLA MISSILE @12/1 ISABEL WILLIAMS | EVAN WILLIAMS 0-0455

PARTY VIBES - 11/1

★★

Arrives here after winning a competitive mares’ handicap chase at Cheltenham in December and returns to hurdles from a lower mark. That makes her interesting on paper, but the switch back in discipline and the demands of this race, in this ground, ask a different set of questions. She has enough going for her to be kept in mind, though she may need to prove she can be as effective over timber in a truly punishing staying handicap.

9
PARTY VIBES @11/1 SAM TWISTON-DAVIES | HENRY DALY 314-31

SPIKE JONES - 22/1

★★

A three-time hurdle winner who began the season in good heart, including finishing close third in a steadily run Cheltenham handicap over three miles. His latest run at Windsor was disappointing, but he is still on a workable mark and has form over further in heavy ground. He is one for those who like a revival angle, yet he does need to put a lesser effort firmly behind him.

10
SPIKE JONES @22/1 BENJAMIN MACEY(5) | SAMUEL DRINKWATER 6-23F7

SOLE SOLUTION - 16/1

★★

A dual hurdle winner last season, including at Sandown, but he arrives off a below-par run at Huntingdon and his yard has been quiet. Cheekpieces are tried for the first time, which may help sharpen him, but he needs a clear bounce back in form to take a hand in a race of this depth.

SOLE SOLUTION @16/1 NED FOX(5) | VENETIA WILLIAMS 11-355

HEROES HANDICAP HURDLE - FINAL THOUGHTS

This looks a proper Sandown slog and in conditions like these the safest approach is to side with a runner who has already proven he can handle both the track and the trip when the ground is deep. Henri The Second fits that description perfectly. He has a strong course record, he comes here off a near-miss over shorter earlier in the month and last season he showed he can see this course-and-distance out strongly on heavy. The return to a more searching trip on testing ground looks exactly what he wants and he shapes like a horse who can be ridden with confidence that he will keep finding when others are floundering up the hill.

The main dangers come from the improving stayers. Hartington is entitled to be much better back up in trip after his latest run, while Titan Discovery has the look of a horse still on the upgrade after his Cheltenham win and he could easily take another step forward. Roaring Conquest is another who has done little wrong this term, arriving match-fit with staying form already banked. Red Dirt Road has to be respected as the reigning winner and proven in the mud here, but the long absence and higher mark demand a leap of faith that he is fully tuned up.

Overall, Henri The Second makes the most appeal as the one with the strongest combination of course evidence, recent form and suitability to the demands this renewal is likely to place on stamina and resilience, with Hartington, Titan Discovery and Roaring Conquest the principal threats in what looks a typically searching edition of this premier handicap.
