WILLIAM HILL HALF A MILL CLASSIC HANDICAP CHASE (PREMIER HANDICAP) (GBB RACE)
This year’s renewal is quality over quantity with just nine declared.
CLASSIC CHASE - PREVIEW
Warwick’s marathon Classic Chase is one of the most informative staying handicaps of the winter; a proper attritional test over nearly three miles six furlongs where jumping rhythm, stamina and the ability to keep finding off the bridle matter far more than speed.
This year’s renewal is quality over quantity with just nine declared (one non-runner), but it’s a fascinating clash between proven mud-loving grinders and classier types stepping into deeper waters under big weights. With the ground described as soft and stamina set to be at a premium, it looks a race that will reward the most reliable stayer with the fewest questions to answer.
CLASSIC CHASE - RUNNER BY RUNNER GUIDE
L'HOMME PRESSE - 5/1
A genuine class act who has mixed it at the very top and returned from a long absence with a creditable second in a Cheltenham handicap over an extended 3m2f. That effort suggested he’s not short of stamina, but this is another big jump in trip and he has to give lumps of weight away on soft ground. If he settles and jumps with more fluency than he sometimes can, he’s a major player, but 12st in a Warwick slog is never straightforward.
MR VANGO - 4/1
The most solid ‘staying handicap’ profile in the field. Last season’s hat-trick culminated in a 4m2f Midlands National and he returned with a huge run when only just denied in the Becher at Aintree over 3m2f on soft. Everything about this race looks ideal; a proper stamina test, likely testing ground and a horse who keeps finding. If he reproduces that Aintree level, he sets the standard.
RESPLENDENT GREY - 13/2
An exciting staying handicapper at his best, signing off last term with a major prize at Sandown and backing it up with a Listed win at Carlisle on his return. However, he was disappointing at Newbury last time and can be a bit slower to hit top stride, not always ideal around Warwick in these long races where position and rhythm matter. He’s capable of running a huge race, but he needs to bounce back and prove he’s as effective at this extreme trip.
NASSALAM - 16/1
A wide-margin Welsh National winner on heavy who is dangerously weighted on that peak form, but his recent record is impossible to ignore. Pulled up on his last four and has shown little sign of a turnaround. A wind op offers hope and any further deterioration in the ground would help, but he needs a dramatic revival to get involved.
MYRETOWN - 11/4
Arguably the most talented horse in the race on raw potential after bolting up in the Ultima at Cheltenham and he’s still relatively unexposed as a staying chaser. The positives are obvious, he travels, he finishes and he’s clearly well handicapped if he continues progressing. The issue is equally clear, falls (including when fancied at Newbury). If he jumps round cleanly, he’s a huge threat but this is not the race for errors.
DESTROYTHEEVIDENCE - 10/1
Lightly exposed compared to some and shaped better last time when runner-up at Ludlow over nearly 3m on soft, keeping on strongly. He’s not obviously thrown in and does need a career best, but the step up in trip could unlock more and he’s shown ability at Warwick in the past. Interesting as one who might keep galloping when others falter.
JOYEUX MACHIN - 12/1
Has bits of form over hurdles and wasn’t totally disgraced back over fences at Doncaster, but he didn’t shape like a horse crying out for an extreme test that day. Being out of the handicap doesn’t help and he needs to find a chunk of improvement to trouble the principals.
VAL DANCER - 13/2
A proper stayer who won the Welsh National and ran well when third in the Becher, finishing a few lengths behind Mr Vango. The big concern is his position 6lbs out of the handicap, but he does look the type to keep battling away and he’s one who should be finishing his race strongly if it turns into a war.
CLASSIC CHASE - FINAL THOUGHTS
For all that Myretown is the obvious ‘could be anything’ horse if he jumps cleanly, the safer play in a race like this is the proven stayer who you know will keep finding and MR VANGO ticks every box. His Midlands National win, his Becher near-miss and the likelihood of a thorough stamina test on soft ground make him the standout option.
L’HOMME PRESSE brings class and could easily travel into it if the race doesn’t become too brutal too soon, but giving away weight over this trip is a proper challenge. VAL DANCER appeals as the each-way alternative, out of the handicap, yes, but he stays all day and arrives off a solid Becher run that reads well in this context.
